On December 11, 2024, European Union ambassadors approved the 15th sanctions package against Russia. These measures are a response to Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine and aim to intensify economic pressure on Moscow.
Key Components of the Sanctions Package:
Targeting the "Shadow Fleet": The EU’s measures focus on vessels from third countries aiding Russia in bypassing existing sanctions. Specifically, the so-called "shadow fleet," which transports Russian oil and oil products globally, has come under scrutiny.
Expansion of the Sanctions List: Approximately 30 organizations and over 50 individuals have been added to the sanctions list. These entities and individuals now face travel bans and asset freezes within the EU.
Sectoral Measures: The package includes specific actions targeting the maritime sector to prevent sanction circumvention. Exceptions have been granted to certain member states, such as the Czech Republic, which received a six-month extension to continue importing Russian oil products via Slovakia.
Reactions:
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the sanctions package and highlighted its focus on curbing the activities of the Russian "shadow fleet."
With this 15th sanctions package, the European Union reaffirms its commitment to addressing Russia’s aggression and supporting Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
